It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas..

There’s something about the festive season that can make you think you should be head to toe in sequins. It that’s a look you love, then I’m all for it – but if you’re struggling with sparkles, shimmer or shiny fabrics, here are some ideas to help you update your usual outfits with some festive magic!

One easy way to change the feel of a simple black dress is to switch your usual shoes and bag for something in a metallic finish – there are some fantastic muted metallics too, which will add some seasonal shine to your look, without you feeling like a Christmas fairy.

Classic tailoring, like a well cut black trouser suit, will last you longer than a stand-alone piece that you won’t wear any other time of the year. Try pairing a suit like this tuxedo version from Zara, £59.99 (jacket), £29.99 (trousers) with a great top covered in sequins or embellishments for a chic and stylish outfit. You can then also re-wear the top with jeans and heels for a more casual going out look.

Another option is to select a skirt and add a very simple, plain top. If you pick a skirt in velvet, satin or sequins you can interchange a variety of tops, which gives you several versatile outfits if you have a lot of parties to go to! This pewter slip skirt from Mint Velvet, £89, would work with jumpers, camisoles and even a simple white t-shirt.

However, if you are a full-on sequin fan then this is the time of year to embrace that! There are some many beautiful options including this full-length sequin dress from Frock & Frill, £85.

Or this silver sequin, belted dress from Jenny Packham at Debenhams, £99 – I’d wear the latter with a contrasting bright colour, like a pair of hot pink shoes and bag for the ultimate party look!

I hope that provides some ideas for the festive season and whatever you decide to wear, have a wonderful Christmas and New Year!
